Kenny Ikeji, a junior at Harvard representing England and the reigning NCAA Division 1 champion in the men's hammer throw at 255-8 (77.92m), joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss taking his mid-term exams this week, before competing as the top entry March 7 in the men's weight throw final at the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships at the TRACK at New Balance in Boston, Mass. Ikeji is one of eight male athletes in collegiate indoor history to surpass 80 feet in the weight throw with his 80-0.25 (24.39m) effort Feb. 24 at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships at the Harvard-Gordon Track and Tennis Center in Cambridge, Mass. He shares learning about the decision from the NCAA to move the men's and women's weight throw competitions up one day in order to showcase the competitions on the infield at the TRACK at New Balance, after several athletes had their implements hit the ceiling in the throwing cage at the facility Feb. 22 at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships. Ikeji examines the depth of both weight throw fields, with seven male competitors having surpassed the 23-meter mark this season, including fellow British athlete Ruben Banks from Alabama, in addition to five women's finalists eclipsing the 23-meter barrier. He reflects on the improvement in the weight throw during the past year, following a 10th-place finish last season at 71-11 (21.92m) at the Division 1 indoor final in Albuquerque, N.M., and how encouraged Ikeji was about the consistency of his series at the Ivy League Heps championship meet, with four throws surpassing 23 meters. Ikeji also highlights the overall growth in the weight throw in both the collegiate and professional ranks since he arrived at Harvard, with American competitors DeAnna Price and Daniel Haugh both setting world all-time bests by eclipsing the 26-meter barrier at the past two USATF Indoor Championships. He analyzes the balance in his training schedule of the hammer throw and weight throw, and shares his excitement for being able to return to outdoor competition in the coming weeks. Ikeji explains how he is looking forward to competing in the hammer throw against Canadian standout Rowan Hamilton, who transferred to Cal this year, in addition to all the returning All-Americans from last year's Division 1 final in Austin, Texas. He also speaks about how significant it is to have an NCAA championship meet being held in Boston, and how Ikeji hopes to create momentum for his fellow Harvard teammates for the three-day schedule by capturing the first men's weight throw crown for the program since Charles Ajootian and Ed Wosal won back-to-back titles in 1969 and 1970.
